The machines that helped humanity survive are beginning to give the wrong answers.
Generations after catastrophe shattered the old world, Port Sel survives partly because of the Archive: inherited knowledge capable of telling its people how to build towers, purify water, treat disease, and repair machines no living person designed.
Then an Archive-built wind tower falls. The forecast was correct. The engineering was within tolerance. People are dead.
Engineer Mara Venn discovers that the Archive may not be failing at all. It may be doing something more dangerous: returning correct answers to a world whose conditions no longer match the assumptions beneath them.
